Banana-currant bread- made for my friend who’s mom just passed. Ingredients chosen and put together in specific ways, has always helped me convey my thoughts/feelings. The bananas used for this bread were (truly) almost black on the outside- many would have tossed them long ago. Although I didn’t know where they would end up, I trusted that something would appear- some occasion worthy of their impeccable sweetness. Today became the day. Once the thin, somewhat shriveled outer skin was removed, the banana flesh in my hand was a perfect creamy-pale, without even a speck of blemish. The batter was so, so light and baked up high and proud-The sweet-savory sugar-nut topping as well as the royal icing drizzle speaks to the mixed up, irregular patterns we encounter throughout life- some roads smooth, others bumpy- there’s light, there’s dark- Some things (and people) we meet along the way that initially appear old and good for nothing can end up being filled with meaningful possibilities. When someone passes, after the initial darkness fades- it’s the sweetness that can and hopefully will linger most
